How Entity Confidence Ltd began
The initiative to promote entity confidence arose from Hedley’s practical work with businesses whose digital presence – including basic elements such as image quality, file naming, and metadata – fell below the threshold AI systems require for confident identification. Many established, reputable businesses had near-zero AI search visibility. Firms with strong local reputations and loyal client bases were being overlooked entirely, while competitors with clearer, better-structured digital signals were being recommended in their place.
The problem was not a lack of quality or credibility – it was that AI systems had no way of recognising it.
This led to a deeper investigation into how generative AI systems evaluate and recommend businesses. The conclusion was striking: AI systems do not simply index a business – they form a judgement about whether that business can be identified, understood, and recommended with confidence. The strength of that judgement depends on the quality, consistency, and breadth of the signals a business presents across its digital footprint.
Hedley and Tony recognised that this represented a fundamental shift in how businesses are discovered, and that most businesses were entirely unaware of it. Entity Confidence Ltd was founded to address that gap – helping businesses understand how AI systems perceive them and providing a structured pathway to improve their visibility within AI-powered recommendation and search.
Why “entity confidence”?
The term was chosen deliberately. In AI and data science, “entity” refers to any distinct, identifiable subject – a person, a place, or a business – and “confidence” describes the degree of certainty a system assigns to its understanding of that entity. The expression captures precisely what determines whether a business is recommended by AI: how confidently the system can identify it, understand it, and vouch for it.
Hedley and Tony believed that if businesses were going to take this challenge seriously, they needed a clear, accurate term for it – not a marketing slogan, but a concept grounded in how AI systems actually work. Entity confidence is that concept, and Entity Confidence Ltd exists to help businesses measure and improve it.
