About Entity Confidence
Our Team
Entity Confidence Ltd was founded by Hedley Basford MBA FCA and Tony Lord CEng MIET. They have been working together for over 25 years.

Hedley Basford MBA FCA
Founder and CEO
Hedley gained an MBA from Cranfield School of Management. Previously he qualified as a chartered accountant (FCA) and worked with Arthur Andersen in London, before establishing his own management consultancy practice, helping small and large companies become profitable and sustainable. For the past ten years, alongside this consultancy work, Hedley and Tony have helped SME clients secure R&D tax relief, including for projects applying artificial intelligence — giving Hedley a close, practical view of how AI systems evaluate and process business information. Photography has been a long-standing personal interest, which he later developed into a commercial service working with businesses across the south-east.

Tony Lord CEng MIET
Technical Director
Tony Lord is the technical brain behind Entity Confidence’s assessment platform. A Chartered Engineer (CEng, MIET) with decades of experience in systems research, development and implementation, Tony designed and built the methodology that powers every Entity Confidence report — from the automated assessment pipeline to the analysis frameworks that translate raw signals into actionable recommendations.
How Entity Confidence Ltd began
Photography was already a long-standing interest of Hedley’s, one he had built into a commercial service working with businesses across the south-east. Behind the camera, he noticed something easy to miss: businesses with excellent reputations and loyal customers were proving invisible to AI-powered search engines, while competitors — sometimes less experienced, sometimes less established — were being recommended instead.
That observation alone might have stayed an interesting anecdote. What turned it into Entity Confidence was the work Hedley and Tony had already been doing together for a decade, helping SME clients secure R&D tax relief for projects applying artificial intelligence. That work had given them a detailed, practical understanding of how AI systems process and evaluate information, so when Hedley raised what he had noticed, Tony recognised immediately that it pointed to something systemic.
Together they spent months investigating how AI systems actually evaluate businesses, treating the question itself as a piece of R&D. The conclusion was striking: AI systems do not simply index a business — they form a judgement about whether that business can be identified, understood, and recommended with confidence. The strength of that judgement depends on the quality, consistency, and breadth of the signals a business presents across its digital footprint.
The problem was not a lack of quality or credibility in the businesses concerned — it was that AI systems had no reliable way of detecting it.
Hedley and Tony recognised that this represented a fundamental shift in how businesses are discovered, and that most businesses were entirely unaware of it. Entity Confidence Ltd was founded to address that gap — helping businesses understand how AI systems perceive them and providing a structured pathway to improve their visibility within AI-powered recommendation and search.
Why we chose the name “Entity Confidence”
This is the thinking behind our name, not a technical claim about how AI itself classifies the term.
The term was chosen deliberately. In AI and data science, “entity” refers to any distinct, identifiable subject – a person, a place, or a business – and “confidence” describes the degree of certainty a system assigns to its understanding of that entity. The expression captures precisely what determines whether a business is recommended by AI: how confidently the system can identify it, understand it, and vouch for it.
Hedley and Tony believed that if businesses were going to take this challenge seriously, they needed a clear, accurate term for it – not a marketing slogan, but a concept grounded in how AI systems actually work. Entity Confidence® is that concept, and Entity Confidence Ltd exists to help businesses measure and improve it.
